Insomnia and the Consequences Thereof

No, no, that’s not fair to the people who actually suffer from sleeping disorders– I don’t actually have insomnia. I just have a 3rd shift sleeping schedule. I have no idea why, to be honest… I don’t actually work third shift, I just seem to have a strange aversion to what precious little daylight there is during Wisconsin winters. But that is neither Here nor There.

Tonight was my poster deadline for SLB Production’s latest project “Les Fleurs Rose” (don’t ask me what the production is about– from what I can see, it’s all about good old fashioned ass-shaking with a little ballet thrown in for artistic measure). With the deadline came the usual few changes to the original design, creation of playbill page blanks, yada yada– I won’t bore you with details. The long and the short of it is that I procrastinated a bit too long (thanks to Welcome Doobie and our adventures with Keystone Bouchard/Fumon Kubo’s reflexive architecture scripts), and working on the materials into the night charged my brain up just enough for it to lower “sleep” on its priority list a few pegs. What-ever is a SL-addicted girl to do?

Clean out her inventory, of course.

Or, rather, continue cleaning it out.ย  I’ve been at it for months now, and I have yet to see the bottom of this expansive list of crap I’ve accumulated since my rezz-date. Tonight’s task was to sort through the new freebie hair I had gotten from ETD in the hairspray sim– an excellent find, by the way: 5 awesome hairstyles with well over 50 colors a piece, L$1 each– and to begin work on visiting/sorting/deleting my constantly-growing list of landmarks. Please note the disdainful look my avatar is giving my cursor as I make my futile attempts at organization.

Visitation of a few landmarks in my inventory eventually brought me to the Think Tank gallery, owned by Robbie Mimistrobel. What was meant to be a quick jaunt inside to tell whether it was a single or multi-artist gallery would turn into a 30 minute stroll through some very interesting installations. “Human Inferno“, “Invasion“, and “Trans-F-ormation” proved to be intriguing bits of art that explore the fine line between the virtual self and the real self (as well as the weird flickering effect that overlapping textures in-world creates). I’d recommend checking it out, if for no other reason than to check out the gallery itself. Nothing terribly innovative in terms of SL architecture, but detailed and pretty to look at, nonetheless– you can find the landmark in my BlogHUD, the widget for which is in the right-hand column of this page.

I decided to give up on all that when my SL decided to crash on me for the n’th time today– I can take a hint, darling, I can take a hint.

Oh, by the by… I know my blog title advertises that I’m supposed to “balance my First and Second Lives”, and I’ve been doing a terrible job of that. So I’ll announce that I’ll be returning to school this Thursday, attending the Milwaukee Area Technical College for Saturated Market Job Hunting (i.e. Graphic Design). I look forward to teaching fresh-out-of-high-school 18 year olds what a real critique is >D

Haiku Speedbuild – 25January08

January 25, 2008

Despite a sim crash mere minutes into the contest this evening, this week’s Haiku Speedbuild yielded some of the most impressive results I’ve seen yet! We’re starting to see a mix of regulars and newbies show up, so I’m glad to see that the word is getting out there and that the event is worth coming back to! We’ve even employed the use of a countdown clock and a voting board so the whole process is more efficient for the contestants and voters. Hooray!

January Updates

Damn, there’s only a week left of January? How the hell did that happen?

Bear with me, I haven’t much important to say at the moment. Just gonna jot what’s on my mind and call it a night:

Calamitous artistic intent……

Tonight, my esteemed colleague and co-founder of the Virtual Artist Alliance Rezago Kokorin rekindled the VAA artist building sessions that we used to hold every once in a while in the early days of the group. The premise of these building sessions is simple: for the first ten minutes the host introduces a concept or technique that can be applied to building in Second Life, and the remainder of the session is dedicated to experimentation, using said concept for artistic application. These sessions are not so much structured classes as they are giant collaborative initiatives that introduce people to new ideas or help them discover new uses for classic ideas via interaction with their peers.

Tonight’s topic: reflexive architecture scripts.

Watching the participants apply the reflexive architecture scripts to their own ideas was infinitely satisfying– despite the sessions being relatively short (6-7PM SLT on Tuesdays) it’s easy to see how quickly imaginations can be sparked into vivid fires of creativity. I’m excited about next week’s continued experimentation with the scripts!

I don’t seem to be able to embed the VAA’s new Google calendar into wordpress pages, but I can offer my readers a link to the calendar so you can keep yourself up to date with our events. Aside from the weekly artist sessions and haiku builds, well be coming up with some fun events for everyone to enjoy– stay tuned!

A Word on SLart

It would seem that the Second Life Art Community is in an uproar about ArtWorld Market/Richard Minsky’s trademark on the term SLart. People who read this blog will know that I’ve spoken with Minsky on the subject and that I’m one of the victims of his trademark enforcement.

Unfortunately, I seem to have miscommunicated my feelings on the whole situation. In my blog on the issue, I stated that “I fully understand and respect that someone who establishes a trademark on somethingโ€“whatever it isโ€“ needs to protect them tooth and nail.” This should not suggest that I approve of what he has done, nor that I am okay with Minsky’s repeated bullying of people who unknowingly infringe upon his trademark– that statement was made because I do, in fact, respect people’s rights to protect their trademarks, but also because I was not aware that Minsky was contacting people for pissant mentions in their profiles or blogs. I figured that Minsky had contacted me because he did not understand that wikis were non-profit, open source collections of information and he was worried that I’d make money off of his trademark. Now that I am aware of the severity of this situation (thanks to Vint Falken and Loki Popinjay), my take on the issue is considerably less understanding and I certainly regret not fighting harder.

In any case, now that I have been educated on the matter, I am prepared to fight alongside my peers in the art community… but as far as I can see, changing SLArtpedia’s name to VirtualArtpedia was a good move on my part. Why would I want to risk a community project that I initiated being associated with a trademark that belongs to an arrogant ass?

Communities such as Slashdot, Fark and the Consumerist have been informed of Minsky’s trademark– if this issue interests you, I’d recommend keeping a lookout, or perhaps sending them your own information on the subject.

[12:17] AlanBehr Blackburn: And they are cheap to get, $45 (real $), and you don’t need a lawyer, most times.
[12:17] LifeFactory Writer: What I would like most to know is if there is a standard format of Rights Release and contract that is popularly in use in SL right now? Or are most things still hinging on this ephermeral and risky notion of “trust?”

[12:18] AlanBehr Blackburn: As for other people: you can trust whom you like, but I like copyright registrations.

[12:22] AlanBehr Blackburn: So if someone takes your unique expression–words that you write, it may have been an avatar that did it.
[12:23] AlanBehr Blackburn: But a real person is behind it and is using the words you wrote.
[12:23] AlanBehr Blackburn: If you claim copyright in the words, you arguably have a claim.
[12:23] AlanBehr Blackburn: The quesion is what to do about it and where.
[12:23] Cybergrrl Oh: What is our recourse? Particularly since this is a global venue and someone may be in another country?
[12:23] AlanBehr Blackburn: At State of Play II, I argued in favor of ingame resolution.

[12:25] Fleep Tuque: Scenario: A group of people are sitting around talking about having an event, I say, “lets call the event Fleeps Great Event!” Everyone says great idea! I make up signs, register a website, we hold the event. A year later, a subset of that group wants to hold the same event and call it Fleep’s Great Event 2. Is that name copyrightable?
[12:25] Cybergrrl Oh: Good question again Leslye – here in SL, we tend to create things that are we give permissions to copy – even with payment. If we do that, do we lose rights?
[12:25] AlanBehr Blackburn: The interntional issue also relates to ingame reolution.
[12:25] AlanBehr Blackburn: You can’t copyright names.

[12:25] AlanBehr Blackburn: Book titles are not copyrightable.
[12:25] AlanBehr Blackburn: However, a videogame title can be a trademark–because it brands a product.
